The core of healing is not about cutting out or treating disease but in helping human beings feel better, healthier and alive.

In June 2012, Manny Correia, 78, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that originated in his appendix.  Chemotherapy has been a life staple since then.

But, this treatment is not the only source of his healing. As Correia said, “There are other ways to communicate with the body.”

Susan Watts is a certified Clinical Oncology Aesthetician.  Ordinarily, Aestheticians work in spas, but Watts spends half her week in the chemotherapy infusion room of Premiere Oncology in Naples.

Sahar makes yoga look easy, and she’s eleven months old.

She can sit in Lotus Pose and her knees drop effortlessly to the floor.  She backbends upside-down with a giggle.  She breathes deeply from her belly, and she is so naturally limber, she can pull a single leg over her head.

Babies understand yoga.  Babies live in the now and focus attention on the toys in their hands, their reflections, or the glasses on your face.

Sahar’s mother is Angie Ahmed, the owner of Cape Coral’s Little Namaste Kids and Baby Yoga Studio.

Ahmed has studied and taught yoga and massage all over the world, and she has opened yoga studios in Australia and Japan.  She and her Cape Coral partner Nikkie Deal are dedicated to keeping kids in their natural yogic state.

It’s time to rethink the culture of birth.  It’s not a medical emergency.

In the words of Ina May Gaskin, the mother of modern midwifery, “Birth is not a brutal affair.”

Birth is a rite of passage that is best experienced in the company of women, notably midwives and doulas.  Television and movies create a bloody and horrifying image of childbirth with a woman screaming while shouting medical professionals lurch for instruments necessary to avert disaster.

Such images breed fear.

After February’s Austin Marathon, my knee looked like a blowfish.

Bending my leg became a nightmare.  After a visit to the doctor (no rips), a prescription of anti-inflammatories, ice bags, massage therapy and a bottle of Aleve, there was little improvement.

Then I tried singing bowls, and the blowfish left the building.

Singing bowls, either crystal or Tibetan metal bowls, are staples in yoga and meditation.  The bowls are tuned to different sound frequencies.  When struck, they sing notes that align with the body’s energy centers.

On March 22nd, the Center of Eternal Light in North Fort Myers hosted Robert Austin for a singing bowl concert. It was more like a slumber party.

5 Tips for Becoming a Better Breather

To yogis, the breath carries prana, the essence of life.  But terrific breathing is also connected to health, happiness, and longevity.

1. Become a belly breather. Six-pack abs may be sexy, but a sucked-in stomach traps short breaths in the upper chest.  Deep, diaphragmatic breathing slows the breath, opens the abdominal wall, stretches the rib cage and increases lung capacity.  When sitting in traffic, attempting to sleep, or waiting in line, practice inhaling and inflating the belly like a balloon.  Exhale, and push all the air out of your nose, pulling your belly to your spine.  Deep breathing has been shown to help reduce fatigue and anxiety, cut stress, lift the mood, lower cholesterol and reduce pain.
