Perhaps you sit on the wallet tucked in your back pocket.

Is your favorite pose standing sassy, popping out your hip?

Day after day, do you tote that heavy briefcase or purse in the same hand, or, worse, the dreaded backpack hangs off one shoulder?

These common habits can wreak havoc on your quadratus lumborum, the deep muscle that connects your hip and lower spine to the rib cage. It’s the hip-hiker.

A strained quadratus lumborum, otherwise known as the QL, is a frequent culprit for lower back pain, the deep ache that hovers on either side of your spine.

In the words of Chad Waterbury, physiologist and fitness author based in California, the QL is the “key player” for stabilizing the spine and pelvis.

“It’s weakness in this muscle that will rob you of power,” he said.

When a young child is diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), the diagnosis is often more stressful than the condition, both for the child and the family.

More than 1 in 10 American children have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Children with ADHD have difficulty in attending, sitting still and controlling impulses.  While families work with educators and medical professionals to understand the challenges of ADHD, yoga and Ayurveda can offer therapeutic and energetic assistance.

Louise Goldberg, author of “Yoga Therapy for Children with Autism and Special Needs” (2013), urges parents and educators to integrate yoga into the home and classroom environments.  Since ADHD children are frequently penalized for their behavior, yoga time is an opportunity for success. They can be quiet and noisy, and active and still – just the kind of visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile variety an active child craves, according to Goldberg.

If you live by your gut, the lunatic is running the asylum.

Your emotions are contaminated by past programming and experience.  An evolved intellect, however, can override this bedlam and then rise above the chaos of your mind. The intellect can differentiate between poison and nectar. Orchestrating this split and becoming an observer of your emotions rather than a participant can be the most challenging practice in yoga.

When you raise the volume of your intellect by practicing jnana yoga, you will get to know your default reactions whether they’re lashing out in anger, withdrawing into depression or taking off into panic.

The intellect recognizes the trappings of ego: conservative, liberal, stylish, rebel, leader, loser, sexy, bookish, oppressed, empowered.  These labels are all illusions.
